Neo-Hippies Thoughts
July 5th, 2005 -- Posted in old blogs, people | No Comments »More bills to make mental notes of. More gloomy anticipation of future bills. Being the sole breadwinner for a household of two, a car and quarterly condo maintenance fees is more than I can ask for.
Am I sounding only so typical of a typical Singaporean complain? If so, that because Singapore is such a ‘typical’ society. Being unwilling to swallow gulps of failure is a typical behavior… a.k.a. ‘kiasu’ in the local slang. Hence, to sacrifice for the sake of one’s own reputable ‘impression’, a.k.a. to ‘save face’, is also another typical social characteristic. In fact, the whole thing about owning a car, despite the soaring cost of keeping one and the convenience by the compact size of the island, is a typical Singaporean way to flaunt one’s affluency.
So why all complains yet sticking to the typical way of living in the city? It’s just coz I’m sick. I have a masochistic tendency to be miserable. I enjoy torturing myself by dwelling in another debt when I just cleared myself from one. I find pleasure in self-deprevation from freedom of the pockets. Perhaps you can call it ‘obsessive self-inflicted poverty’. Digging holes in my own pockets…
No really, it is just hard to be the only one bringing income home while Sunsun is still looking really hard for a job in Singapore. When most of her past career credentials were with a premature industry in Singapore, locating an appropriate position for her will be harder than expected. Most interviews she’d gone for have concerns about her past monthly salary, even when she had expressed her own will to downgrade the pay. Yet, they all settle for a less experienced hand for a lower expected pay. How silly?
