Alaska Project

Sometimes I wonder what crazy ideas desperation can bring…

This watch you’re looking at is not a mere exhibition piece, it’s actually launched and sold at the Baselworld 2008. Here’s a short history of this unusual piece:

In 2007, Lot 211 sold for SFr 64,900 (commission included) at the Omegamania Auction. It was listed as

New Rubber Slippers…

... not exactly referring to rubber footwears, but rather new rubber straps for my Omega Planet Ocean 45mm.

I should have gotten these long ago instead of the metal bracelet. It’s more comfortable and the contrast is nicer too.

... but now it reminds me of Casino Royale.

Royce… Bitter Sweet

April 20th, 2008 -- Posted in indulgence | No Comments »

I’d always loved Japanese chocolate. When I was stationed in Japan four years ago, I tried many different brands other than Meiji… Royce was one of them. Yesterday, Sunsun found a box here at Ngee Ann City. RejOYCE!!!

The packaging is top class. Compared to Godiva, this kind of premium food is definitely worth every cent. It comes in 3 layers of packaging. There’s an silver outer packaging with a dry ice pack outside the box, a plastic wrap inside with another clear plastic tray with lid.

Mmm… I can almost smell the cocoa from here.

Notice the thick layer of soft chocolate

Yikes! Annie’s nose was so quick, she managed to get the first bite before I could…

TAG Heuer MERIDIIST: A New Name to Luxury Communication

April 19th, 2008 -- Posted in product design | No Comments »

Following the aestheticism of fine watches and jewellery, mobile phones are the next carry-on belonging we have today that are treated with luxurious touches. TAG Heuer is no newcomer in such aestheticism.

TAG Heuer has announced the release Meridiist at the end of last year. Developed with a French company Modelabs, the Meridiist is ready to hit the luxurious fashion phone market with this Vertu lookalike.

Swiss engineered and hand assembled from 430 components, the Meridiist is constructed with corrosion-resistant, watch-making 316L steel and unscratchable 60.5 carats sapphire crystal dual displays. It is packed with a 1.9” QVGA main screen, monochrome OLED on its outer rim, 2-megapixel camera, MP3/AAC/MPEG-4 playback, Bluetooth, with 28 days power reserve and 7 hours of talktime, and can do only GSM/GPRS. Not exactly the technical specs of a high end phone, the real costs of the handset come from the design, the refined 316L grade steel, scratch-proof sapphire crystal, and the customization with exotic skin/leather of various colors.

It will be available in September 2008 at between

Concord C1 Tourbillon Gravity

April 17th, 2008 -- Posted in horology | No Comments »

Got these pics off WatchismoTimes…

If you’re still unfamiliar with the new C1 range by Concord that made its debut last year, it’s a 44mm case on a very rugged looking steel-on-rubber bezel frame, a 3.3 mm thick sapphire crystal and a crown of rubber, composite and steel. The other signature of C1 is the dials made of carbon fiber and machined metal with sunken applied hour-markers filled with luminescent material.

The C1 Tourbillon Gravity is the latest addition in 2008, enhanced with a tourbillon housed outside the dial and outside the case, which is a revolutionary perpendicular mechanical concept. This unconventional position of the tourbillon enables it to serve its initial function: to negate the effects of gravity in a vertical position.

By Wikipedia, a tourbillon is defined as:

... is a type of mechanical clock or watch escapement invented in 1795 by Abraham-Louis Breguet that is designed to counter the effects of gravity and other perturbing forces that can affect the accuracy of a timepiece. This is accomplished by mounting the escapement in a rotating frame, so that the effect of gravity cancels out when the escapement is rotated 180

An Afternoon At Bangsar…

April 12th, 2008 -- Posted in travel | No Comments »

We both got bored so we decided to venture out to a place from the bottom of our “places-to-go” list… Bangsar Village.

Located just a couple kilometer from Mid Valley, Bangsar is a suburb residential area with many small spots for food and shopping. To certain extent, its euro-asian community mix of that place reminds me of Holland Village in Singapore.

The only difference, I guess, will be Bangsar Village shopping centre and its newer twin Bangsar Village II next door.

Inside Bangsar Village and Bangsar Village II, there’s a wide array of posh boutiques and cozy caf

Young Once…

April 11th, 2008 -- Posted in deep | 3 Comments »

Feel like you’re getting older all the sudden? That’s what Adrian feels today when finding himself surrounded by youngsters. I can understand where that’s coming from, but I have to disagree that I will feel the same…

Somehow I just don’t. When I see a pretty young face, I tend to think it lacks the sophistication. When I see the high level of energy, I thought mine was well spent over the past 10 years. Sometimes I even think I’m fortunate enough to have spent that 10 years the way I did, and many of these young kids might not even enjoy their next 10 years as much as I did.

And I’m not talking about spending the last 10 years just having fun. Neither am I talking about 10 years of work, work and only work. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, although all play and no work makes Jack a dumb boy. I’m talking about having a damn good work/life balance. Prior to the major imbalance stint I experienced last year, I must say I had my good share of fun while working smart. I’m not the brightest student or the employee of the month, but I constantly kept track of my short-term goals and long-term objectives, and rewarded myself upon each achievement with lots of parties and fun. And I mean some heavy-duty parties! Wink

When I felt I had enough of parties, I decided to settle down. So I got married. Now I’m enjoying the peaceful married life while bringing my career to a new level.

So do I find myself envious of the energetic young bods? Hardly. Everyone was young once. I had my share of younger days and these youngsters are having theirs… Been there, done that.
